IOT And Maritime Shipping

Montreal outside in February does not sound like great working conditions. Apparently port authorities have done that for years. Until recently the inspection of incoming cargo was performed in person during all seasons of the year.

Recently I listened an episode of IOT for all featuring Jennifer Ivens from Canscan. Canscan focuses on applying AI and IOT to maritime shipping. The episode is a fascinating journey of someone who saw inefficiencies of maritime shipping and tried to solve it.

One of my favorite points is that Canscan repurposes existing cameras and wifi. All to often the reflex is to buy new equipment which often neglects the cost of maintenance to keep new hardware functional.

Another important moment is her observation that the long term goal is to move from real time analysis to predictive analytics. This concept is useful not only in maritime shipping but in websites and programming in general.
